Proteolytic enzymes, including bromelain, papain and protease, are enzymes that specifically act on protein. Protease taken with food is completely dedicated to the digestive process and breaks down dietary proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids that can be easily absorbed. When taken on an empty stomach with no food to digest, protease can be absorbed intact into the bloodstream where it appears to help restore and maintain healthy blood and body functions.
It is well documented that protease acts differently in the tissues of the body than it does in the digestive tract. Both clinical and laboratory research shows that proteolytic enzymes taken on an empty stomach can have a beneficial effect on the immune system and inflammatory processes. In addition, the amount of protease needed for systemic activity is often much greater than that needed for digestion. Yet most systemic protease products on the market contain the same protease blend found in digestive products. Laboratory analyses have also found that certain protease exhibits considerably greater activity in the blood than other protease.

The significance of alpha-2-macroglobulins
These macroproteins exist in large numbers in the presence of inflammation. They help deliver cytokines, macrophages and fibroblasts to the site of inflammation, so they can begin the work of reparing damaged tissue.

pHysioProtease Chart Once in the blood stream, specific protease binds to alpha-2-macroglobulins, causing them to shift to their activated form, which increases their mobility. This recently patented mechanism for increasing activated alpha-2-macroglobulin in the blood and extravascular tissue (US patent 6,413,512) emphasizes the importance of using systemic protease products that function in the physiological conditions of the blood and tissues.

pHysioProtease is a proprietary blend of proteases available exclusively in select products distributed by Enzymes, Inc. Research has shown that pHysioProtease has the precise combination of proteases for optimal activity in the physiological conditions of the blood and other tissues providing maximum patented systemic action. Calcium is added to help prevent the depletion of intracellular calcium that may result from the presence of this highly active blend of proteases in the blood.

A recent study compared pHysioProteases with three commercially available protease blends recommended for systemic use. The results revealed that pHysioProtease provided signficantly more systemic enzyme activity per dose.

*pHysio-U is our designation for the proteolytic activity expected in the tissues. This unit is based on an innovative assay developed to measure the activity of protease in simulated conditions for the temperature, pH, substrates and buffering mechanisms of the blood. The FCC HUT designation is an indicator of the proteolytic activity in the conditions of the digestive tract, not the body tissues.
